COMBINATION THERAPY
What is combination therapy?
Every person is unique with different perceptions and tolerances to the various treatment options available for snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). This can greatly impact how the individual responds to treatment.
Rather than treating people with a 'one size fits all' approach, combination therapy aims to tailor treatment options to suit the needs of the individual. This involves the use of two or more therapies to treat their condition. The number and types of treatment options recommended is dependant upon the likely cause of their snoring or OSA. This approach also gives people the flexibility to tailor their treatment needs to suit their variable lifestyles
New research into OSA treatment has shown that combination therapy often gives better control of OSA symptoms as compared to single treatment therapies. This is likely due to improved compliance and adherence to therapy. An overall improvement in health outcomes with the combined approach, as compared to single treatment options alone, has also been noted.
Combination therapy is fast gaining popularity within the medical profession.
What types of combinations are available?
There are many different combinations available depending on your individual needs. Ensure you have discussed all combination options with your treating medical practitioner/specialist prior to commencing any alternative treatment.
At Custom Sleep Solutions we provide oral appliances to treat snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea.
Oral appliances may be combined with the following:
- Oral appliances and CPAP - may be used at the same time to decrease CPAP pressures and improve compliance with CPAP. Also may be used alternately during the same sleep period or at different sleep periods to improve outcomes..
- Oral appliances and positional devices - increases side sleeping to further decrease collapse of soft tissue into the airway.
- Oral appliances and nasal therapies - improves nasal breathing which is essential for success of oral appliances. Should nasal therapies be successful, review by an ENT surgeon may be of benefit.
